NCSSM vs. Voyager/South Granville

NCSSM Wrestling took on two familiar rivals on Wednesday evening at a Tri hosted by Voyager.  The UNIs faced conference rivals from last year in Voyager and Granville Central.  First up was the match against Granville Central with action beginning at the 160 pound weight class.  Captain Matt "Superman" Nichols got the UNIs fired up with a pin in the first match against Tyler "Batman" Jackson.  Science and Math followed with 4 straight victories including pins by captain Billy Gottenstrater and Brooks Estes as well as a convincing 23-10 takedown clinic major by Elijah Whitsett.  Captain Duncan Brown and Junior standout Niles Moffat also recorded pins in the match and the victory was sealed with a hard fought 12-9 victory by Michael Li at 152 pounds.  Final Score NCSSM 43 – Granville Central 27

In the second match NCSSM faced Voyager for the second time in this young season. Coach Diaz had his boys ready and he was looking to avenge the Voyager loss from week one of the season.  The captains were able to secure the choice that the UNI coaching staff was looking for and this proved pivotal in the late matches of the dual.  Captain Billy Gottenstrater started us off with a convincing fall in the first match at 182 pounds followed by two more pin falls by Brooks Estes and Elijah Whitsett.  The early UNI lead would not last as forfeits at the lower weights quickly put Voyager on top 24-18 going into the 126 pound weight class.  With Voyager forced to show first they sent their wrestler to face captain Duncan Brown who secured a 9-1 major victory for the UNIs.  Following a forfeit at 138 the UNIs came back with 3 straight dominant pins by Miles Williams, Niles Moffat and captain Matt Nichols to secure the victory.  In his first varsity appearance of the season Ebube Chuba put forth a valiant effort at 170 pounds, twice fighting from an immanent pin to get back to neutral and continue the action.  Final Score NCSSM 40 Voyager 30

That brings the UNI wrestlers to 6-0 on the season, 2-0 in conference.  Next week we have our home opener against conference opponent Bunn and Wakefield Tues. Dec. 10th at 6 PM in the PEC and the Wakefield Wolverine Challenge Saturday Dec 14th, our first individual tourney of the season.
