UNIs Wrestling Finishes Strong

The NCSSM Wrestling team had a busy schedule going into break this week. After their convincing win over Franklinton early in the week at home the UNIs headed to the Eastern Alamance Invitational where they were represented by 9 members of the team. This was a 2 day event with 23 teams competing, 19 of which were at the 3A and 4A level. The UNIs had a strong first day and sat in 7th place after the first day of wrestling was complete. Three of the UNI wrestlers went on to medal in the event and they finished a respectable 11th overall as a team. Henry Seiler placed 4th in the 145 pound weight class with a 3-2 record, Morgan Howell was 6th at 152 with a 4-3 record, and Benson Robles was 4th at 182 with a 4-2 record.

The team was right back on the mat this Monday for a Tri meet against Conference rival South Granville and also Wakefield from Raleigh. In the opening conference match the team ran off string of 6 pins in a row that really fired up the NCSSM supporters in the crowd. This started at 126 with Duncan Brown, followed by Nick McNamara, Josh Babich, Henry Seiler, Matthew Nichols (in his first action of the year), and Billy Gottenstrater. Benson Robles and Jeshua Ray both followed with wins to put the match out of reach for South Granville and give NCSSM the win 45-36 in this key conference matchup. Special shout out to Nick Munsen who was able to get a pin in his 152 pound exhibition match, great job Nick!!!

In the closing match against Wakefield the UNIs were again very strong in a 60-24 victory. Wakefield was unfortunately experiencing a number of injuries in their line up as NCSSM dealt with earlier in the year so there were only 7 contested matches. The UNIs were able to win 6 of the 7 matches with Duncan Brown, Nick McNamara, Matthew Nichols, Benson Robles and Aaron Kovasckitz all securing pins for NCSSM.

Next action for the UNI Wrestlers will be a home Tri meet January 4th against Voyager and Roanoke Rapids followed by the Rocket Invitational January 5th at Person County High School. Please come out and support our UNIs, the first home match crowd was great and really inspired the team!!!
