NCSSM Earns Men's Swimming State Championship

Science and Math coach Mike Newbauer knew the path to the state title ran though rival Carrboro.

"This was our goal, our dream," Newbauer said of the title. "We had in our mind we were going to win states. The first thing is we were trying to beat Carrboro. We had never beaten Carrboro in a dual meet, but we beat them in Regionals and knew we could win."

Science and Math's Jacob Vosburgh was not the meet's MVP, but he was the Unicorns' star. The junior won the 200-yard freestyle and then the 500-free in meet record time. He also swam on the winning 200-free relay team, which also set a meet record, and the second-place 400-free relay team.

"Jacob provided a strong foundation for us, but everyone was the MVP, we needed all the points," Newbauer said. Matt Weaver also took a third for the Unicorns in the 50-free.

The 200-free team consisted Jack Wilson, Weaver, Daniel Birmingham and Vosburgh. Weaver, Allen and Gabe Shepherd joined Vosburgh on the 400-relay.
