NCSSM Athletics Updates - 12/19/12

Durham, N.C. - The NCSSM Athletics teams completed their team competitions before the winter break. They will get back into full action on January 3 as basketball hosts Voyager. Below are the recaps on the past week of events.

Basketball: The men's and women's teams started their conference season at home on Tuesday as Cedar Ridge came to the PEC.  The women lost in the early game 51-16 while the men also took the loss 80-48.  Both teams hit the road for games on Friday and Monday. On Friday they traveled to Franklin Academy with the men losing a nailbitter 65-63 and the women losing 37-20.  On Monday they went across town to the Durham School of the Arts.  DSA took both games with the 50-34 win over the men and 40-25 win over the women.   Both teams get back into action on January 3 as they host Voyager Academy starting at 6 p.m.

Swimming: The men's and women's swim teams took victories in a conference meet with Voyager and Cedar Ridge.  The men took the clean sweep in all events while the 400 Freestyle Relay team of  Matt Weaver, Gabe Shepherd, Jack Allen, Jacob Vosburgh re-broke a school record with a time of 3:26.66.  The women beat Voyager in all events and over took Cedar Ridge with its depth.  The team returns to action after break on January 10 with a home meet at Edison Johnson.

Wrestling: In front of a loud and supportive home crowd the NCSSM Wrestling team was able to secure a 41-27 victory over Franklinton Wednesday night. After their convincing win over Franklinton early in the week at home the UNIs headed to the Eastern Alamance Invitational where they were represented by 9 members of the team. The UNIs had a strong first day and sat in 7th place after the first day of wrestling was complete. The team was right back on the mat this Monday for a Tri meet against Conference rival South Granville and also Wakefield from Raleigh. In the opening conference match the team ran off string of 6 pins in a row that gave NCSSM the win 45-36. In the closing match against Wakefield the UNIs were again very strong in a 60-24 victory. Next action for the UNI Wrestlers will be a home Tri meet January 4th against Voyager and Roanoke Rapids followed by the Rocket Invitational January 5th at Person County High School.
