Fall Sports Finish Successful Seasons
Durham, N.C. - The fall sports teams had one of the most successful seasons in NCSSM Athletics history. As the Unicorns moved up from the NCHSAA 1A to 2A, the results continued to remain high. NCSSM took five Northern Carolina 2A conference championships, two regional titles and a state championship. Four coaches were also named conference Coach of the Year in their sport by their peers. Here are updates from all of the teams:
Men's and Women's Cross Country - The impressive season concluded with a NCHSAA 2A State Championship, Regional Championship and a Northern Carolina Championship from the Men's Cross Country team while the Women's team took a conference championship and had a strong 10th place team finish in the state meet. The NCSSM men were led by Josh Rees-Jones (16:13.05), Nicholas Walker (16:15.27) and Chatham Ellwanger (16:23.21) finishing second, third and fifth in the boys’ 5K. Duncan Lemay (17:18.11) and Mitch Rees-Jones (17:35.26) completed NCSSM’S scoring. NCSSM was led by Kim Ngo (20:43), Riley Reid (22:03) and Emily Lambeth (22:07).
Women's Tennis - The Women's Tennis Team took a Regional Championship with a win over Carrboro and completed a State Runner-Up finish in the State Finals losing 5-1 to Salisbury. NCSSM was undefeated in the Northern Carolina regular season and added a conference championship to its resume.
Men's Soccer - The soccer team made it to the State Quarterfinals before falling in the last four minutes of regulation at First Flight in Kill Devil Hills. The regular season saw NCSSM go 13-1 and gain a Northern Carolina 2A Championship. Bryon Spells was named Northern Carolina All-Conference and Defensive Player of the Year.
Women's Golf - The Women's golf team qualified for the State tournament as a team for the first time and finished ninth in the state. Jessica Lee finished in 17th place overall in the State Championship. They also pulled in a Northern Carolina Championship as they won the conference tournament.
Volleyball - The volleyball team challenged the top teams in the conference, but finished 5th in the conference standings and lost in five sets in the tournament.
