NCSSM Athletics Updates - 1/21/13

Durham, N.C. – The teams are back from winter break and have gotten off to great starts in 2013. Below are recaps of the last few weeks for each team.

Swimming – The men's swimming team came back from break to continue breaking school records. In the January 10 home meet, the 200 Medley Relay of Gabe Shepherd, Irwin Li, Jacob Vosburgh, Matt Weaver (1:44.99) and the 200 Freestyle - Jacob Vosburgh (1:47.69) broke records. The men then took their first ever conference win over Carrboro in their meet on January 17. The men finished the last two weeks with a split in the home meet with a win over Raleigh Charter and a loss to Carrboro, and then avenged their loss with two victories over Carrboro and Northwood. The women's team has continued their strong season with a split on January 17 with a win over Northwood and a lost against Carrboro. They fell in their first meet after the break with losses against Carrboro and Raleigh Charter.

Wrestling – The wrestling team has started the new year off with five straight victories including two conference wins over Voyager Academy and Granville Central. They continue to dominate the competition and had strong non-conference wins over Roanoke Rapids, future opponent's in next year's conference realignment, and Kerr-Vance Academy and North Raleigh Christian Academy.

Basketball – The men's team gained their first two victories on the season with win's over Granville Central and Raleigh Charter. The UNIs took the 76-70 home win against Granville Central and beat rival Raleigh Charter on the road 46-38. The women's team has played hard the whole season and has given several teams a scare but has not been able to pull of a victory.

Indoor Track – The women's team finished first and the men finished third out of ten schools in the opening meet in the indoor season at Eastern Alamance. NCSSM gained one state qualifier with Ashleigh Cleveland in the high jump.
